My paternal roots go back to the hills of Tennessee. One. family story told about my grandparents features my granny. apparently she was quite a pistol. Gramps was trying to impress her & told her he had busted a bronc. Her reply was, “so what, I’ve busted two.”  After marrying they up  landed in the Texas oil fields. Gramps became a wildcatter, which involved him making contact with the land owners & oil field drillers & selling their oil to the oil refineries.

Therefore he had the money saved to become a homesteader in New Mexico. The land was good for cattle as well as much excellent for farming. He then made contact with the producers of the various of the crops grown in the area and  bartered & sold those as well as farming his own land. To be successful at homesteading a person had to have the financing to make the  improvements that are required to keep the land.

My mom, Frances’s family were homesteader’s for several years before leaving for California. By then she had married Charles Jackson. They eventually borrowed the money and purchased a farm themselves. Their farm was on the edge of good farm land and we did live in the homesteaders shack left there by the seller. The land was good & rich but it broke down into the brakes that denote one type of land from another. This put the house & barns low & out of sight of other farm houses.  This suited Charles very well.

Well, back to the Jackson clan. Uncle Joe was the first born. then, I think, Charles, Aunt Ruth, Uncle Chasse, Uncle Bruce, Aunt Argie Nell. Some of their stories were good. My granny told of Chasse asking if he could take a fork to school .Oh my goodness. Now that’s real class or so she thought. She later learned that the next fight Joe got into there was little Chasse with his fork trying to give it to Joe, saying ” here Joe, fork him, fork him.”

Till next time

Patricia
